What Gemstone is Topaz?

The name "topaz" is usually derived (via Old French: Topace and Latin: Topazus) from the Greek Τοπάζιος (Τοpáziοs) or Τοπάζιον (Τοpáziοn), from Τοπαζος, the ancient name of St. John's Island in the Red Sea. Alternatively, the word topaz may be related to the Sanskrit word तपस् "tapas", meaning "heat" or "fire".

Topaz is a silicate mineral of aluminium and fluorine with the mineral formula Al2SiO4(F, OH)2. It is used as a gemstone in jewelry and other adornments.

Common topaz in its natural state is colorless, though trace element impurities can make it pale blue, golden brown to yellow orange. Topaz is often treated with heat, or radiation to make it a deep blue, reddish-orange, pale green, pink, or purple. Although it is often associated with golden yellow and blue, it comes in a variety of colors, including colorless. The rarest are natural pinks, reds and delicate golden oranges, sometimes with pink hues.

What is Irradiation?

It is widely known in the gem and jewellery business that various types of gemstones available in the markets have been enhanced by the irradiation process, such as yellow beryl, green diamond, grey pearl, smoky quartz, pink spodumene or kunzite, blue topaz and red tourmaline or rubellite. In particular, the majority of blue topazes sold in the markets are the irradiated ones.

Studies have shown that gemstones that are irradiated with low energy gamma ray are safe to wear.
